atheism

I never expected the world renowned evolutionary biologist and superstar atheist Richard Dawkins to write a book aimed at children. But, alas, The Magic of Reality: How We Know What’s Really True is slated for an October release.

A believer can never be proven wrong, and an atheist can never be proven right. At least that’s an argument I heard on Catholic radio the other day. The host shared a debate he heard between a believer and an atheist. It went something like this: Atheist: Prove to me that there is a god. [...]

In 2001 Sam Harris was a graduate student in neuroscience. But like so many people, 9/11 radically altered his life. Seeing affluent young men kill themselves and others in the name of their God led him to conclude there was something fundamentally wrong with many of the world’s religions. I spoke with Harris about his thoughts on religious fundamentalism, atheism, and terrorism.

Religulous was obviously made for Atheists. It preaches to the choir with no apologies. It won’t change believers’ minds, and it doesn’t try to. As a piece of op-ed filmmaking, it is well done, very entertaining, and the humor is often sidesplitting. Hell, even many believers will enjoy this movie.

I posted a short personal essay the other day, explaining my belief that evolution and belief in a creator are not mutually exclusive. I was very impressed at the debate that ensued in the comments. It was relatively free of personal attacks, name calling, and general stupidity. These were very intelligent, informed, thoughtful and somewhat long-winded comments

You can read all 4500 words of comments here, but I’m sure you have better things to do. Therefore I have edited the comments down to about 2500 words for you reading pleasure.
